Kitty Hawk Wind South Offshore Wind Project

Kitty Hawk Wind South is a proposed offshore wind development by Avangrid located in the federal lease area OCS-A 0508 off the coast of North Carolina which has the potential to deliver up to 2.4 Gigawatts (GW) of power to North Carolina, Virginia, or other states or private companies.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) began working with the North Carolina Renewable Energy Task Force in 2010 to identify an area for offshore wind development, with a focus on avoiding ecologically sensitive areas and multiple use conflicts.

In March 2017, the BOEM awarded federal lease area OCS-A 0508 to Avangrid in a competitive auction.

In June 2022, Avangrid divided the Kitty Hawk Wind Project into two distinct projects in two defined lease areas: Kitty Hawk North in the newly designated OCS-A 0559 and Kitty Hawk South in the remainder of OCS-A 0508.

Avangrid announced in October 2024 that it had closed the sale of the Kitty Hawk North offshore wind lease area OCS-A 0559 and associated assets to Dominion Energy. Avangrid retains the ownership and associated rights to the Kitty Hawk South lease, and will continue the development of the area.
